How to Draw a Face: Step by Step

By MasterAllArts March 15, 2026 12 min read beginner

Drawing a human face is one of the most rewarding skills an artist can develop. In this tutorial, we will break down the process into manageable steps that anyone can follow, from mapping out basic proportions to adding final details and shading.

1

Draw the Head Shape

Start by drawing a slightly elongated oval or egg shape. This will serve as the basic structure for the head. Keep your lines light so they can be erased later. The oval should be slightly narrower at the bottom to represent the jaw area.

2

Map the Proportions

Draw a horizontal line through the middle of the oval -- this is where the eyes will sit. Then divide the lower half into two equal parts for the nose line and mouth line. These guidelines ensure your features are properly placed.

💡

Pro Tip: The Rule of Thirds

The eyes are positioned at roughly the halfway point of the head, not near the top as many beginners assume. The space between the eyes is approximately one eye-width apart.
3

Draw the Eyes

On the horizontal center line, sketch two almond shapes evenly spaced apart. Add circles for the irises and smaller circles for the pupils. Remember to leave a small highlight spot in each eye for a lifelike appearance.

4

Add the Nose

From the bottom of the eye line, draw two short lines downward to the nose guideline. At the base, add a small triangular shape for the nose tip and two subtle curves for the nostrils. Keep the nose relatively simple at this stage.

5

Draw the Mouth

Place the mouth on the lower guideline. Start with a horizontal line for where the lips meet, then add the upper lip with a gentle M-shape and the lower lip with a soft U-curve. The corners of the mouth roughly align with the center of each eye.

6

Add Ears and Hair

Position the ears between the eye line and the nose line. For hair, sketch the general shape and flow direction first rather than drawing individual strands. Hair adds volume, so draw it slightly above and around the head shape.

7

Shade and Refine

Erase your guidelines and refine the contours. Add shading under the brow, along the nose, beneath the lower lip, and under the chin. Use smooth gradients for a realistic look. Build up shadows gradually from light to dark.
