The unbroken silhouette
We open on a young woman in strict left profile, her face floating against an almost black ground. Notice immediately how her whole identity is read from a single line — brow, nose, lips, chin — without a single drawn outline.
A Leonardesque profile
This is a Portrait of a Young Lady, painted around 1500 by a follower of Leonardo da Vinci, in oil on a panel later transferred to hardboard. The strict profile echoes ancient Roman coins and a long Florentine tradition, and we can already feel the sfumato handling typical of Leonardo's circle.
Pyramid and S-curve
Look at the structure: the bust forms a soft pyramid anchored by the vertical profile axis on the left, while her hair sweeps back in a long S-curve toward the right. The face sits high, near the upper third, and the eye travels down to the gold chain, then up through the cascading hair before resting in the dark.
Warm skin, cool ground
A soft, diffused light pours in from the upper left, slightly in front of the sitter. The face and chest read in high key, the hair falls into mid-tones, and the right side and lower corners dissolve into near-black shadow — a sculptural, almost theatrical chiaroscuro.
The contour that isn't a line
Push in to the brow, eye, and bridge of the nose. There is no painted outline here. The skin simply steps down through warm cream and peach into a cool umber shadow, and the edge is made entirely by value dropping into the dark ground — a lost-and-found edge in its purest form.
Sfumato, but check the jaw
Now drop to the cheek and jaw. Inside, the transition from peachy cream to cool grayish shadow is blended without a hard seam — true sfumato. But squint at the silhouette against the dark: a faint darker edge lingers along the jaw, a residual drawn contour the soft blending couldn't quite dissolve.
A downcast gaze in three marks
Closer still, into the eye. A thin umber arc for the upper lid, a single dark sliver where the iris is mostly hidden, and one tiny reserved catchlight at the inner corner. That is the entire eye — and yet it reads as alive and looking down.
The lips that aren't outlined
Move down to the mouth. The lower lip is a confident warm red shape with a bright forward-projecting highlight and a cool shadow underneath. The upper lip barely exists as a line — its lower edge feathers softly into the dark of the parting, and its upper edge dissolves into the surrounding skin.
Hair, strand by strand
Drift up to the crown. The mass of hair is built from broad warm-amber glazes, then articulated with fine, dark, hairpin-shaped strokes that trace the crests of each wave. From a distance it reads as one auburn cloud; up close it is patient, curl-by-curl construction.
A chain of dots
Down at the chest, the gold necklace is a marvel of economy: one long ochre catenary line punctuated at each link by a tiny yellow dot, with a few darker umber accents where links overlap. Rhythm alone reads as jewelry — no modeled volume, no cast shadow.
Bold strokes for silk
Now contrast all that softness with the right sleeve. Broad, diagonal strokes of pearl-gray and white ride over a deep blue-black ground, the highlights laid in single confident passes that follow the fall of the fabric. The ridge of each fold stays crisp, the trailing edge feathers away — a very different, more tactile brushwork than the skin.

-
Face in left profile
The sitter's brow, nose, lips, and chin form a single, unbroken contour line against the black ground.
A tight left-profile crop of a young woman's head, set against an almost black ground that reads as a very deep cool green-black. The skin is built from pale ivory-ivory mid-tones with a warm rose flush pooled on the cheek and a cooler shadow along the jaw and under the chin; transitions are soft with no hard seams between planes. The brow ridge, bridge of the nose, lip line, and rounded chin do read as a single continuous silhouette edge against the dark, unbroken by a stroke break. Auburn hair is rendered in layered, slightly broken wavelets of warm umber over darker recesses, with loose curling strands falling across the neck. Fine craquelure is visible across paint, and a thin gold chain crosses the bare shoulder at lower right.
-
Cheek sfumato
The transition from the lit cheek to the shadowed jaw is achieved through smooth tonal blending alone, with no drawn contour.
The crop shows a profile bust from the tip of the nose, through lips, cheek, jaw, and neck, ending where auburn hair falls. The cheek is built from warm peachy cream tones that gradient softly into cooler grayish-browns along the jaw and neck. Examining the silhouette of the jaw and chin against the dark background at roughly (0.30, 0.55)–(0.55, 0.95), a thin, slightly darker linear edge is visible separating flesh from background — not a purely dissolved sfumato boundary. Craquelure is visible across the entire surface, with finer cracks in the lighter flesh passages and broader ones over the shadowed neck.
-
Crown hair texture
Fine, dark, hairpin-shaped strokes interlace with warm auburn glazes to create individual curls at the top of the head.
The crop shows a field of curved, undulating strokes that sweep left-to-right in shallow S-curves, modeling the tops of several waves. Fine, dark hairpin-shaped strokes (thinned to a point at one end and slightly fanning at the other) trace the crests and trails of curls, sitting on top of broader warm-amber passes. Values run from near-black in the recesses to a glowing amber on the lit ridges, with soft transitions rather than hard edges between them. A network of fine age cracks (craquelure) crosses the entire surface, and a small pale patch of skin is visible at the lower left edge.
-
Right satin sleeve
Broad, diagonal strokes of white and pearl-gray lie over a dark blue ground, creating sharp highlights on the folded sleeve.
The crop isolates a portion of a satin sleeve rendered in pale grey-white over a deep blue-black ground. Broad, diagonal brushstrokes follow the fall of the fabric from upper-left to lower-right, laying down the highlights with a single confident pass. Mid-tones of warm pearl-grey sit between the brightest strokes and the dark ground, which shows through at the deepest folds. Edges along the crest of each fold are crisper than the trailing shadow edges, where the pigment feathers into the dark. A pervasive network of fine craquelure covers the surface, with slightly thicker crackle along the dark passages.
-
Profile contour line
No painted outline separates the skin of the forehead and nose from the background; the edge is made solely by value contrast.
The crop isolates the left profile: a high forehead, a downcast almond eye, a straight nose, and softly parted lips, framed by a wave of auburn hair against a near-black ground. Along the brow ridge, temple, and bridge of the nose the flesh steps down through warm cream and peach mid-tones into a cool umber shadow before meeting the background; no continuous linear stroke runs parallel to the silhouette. The nose tip and the curve beneath the nostril hold the brightest flesh notes, and the edge there reads as a clean meeting of light value against dark value, with the shadow side blending into the ground rather than being fenced off by a drawn line. Craquelure is uniform over face and ground, and the skin shows soft wet-into-wet transitions with no hard seaming visible at the contour.
-
Gold chain necklace
Small yellow-ochre dots and thin lines mark the individual links of the chain across the chest.
The crop shows the upper chest and cleavage of a young woman draped with a delicate gold chain, framed by dark blue-black garment edges in the upper-left and lower-right corners. The skin is a warm cream-peach with subtle gradation: slightly warmer and lighter on the upper breast mound, cooling to a paler shadow below the chain line. The necklace is built from a single thin ochre contour that dips in a long catenary arc, punctuated at regular intervals by small yellow-ochre dots where the links meet; a few darker umber accents mark overlapping links. Fine stray hairs are visible as faint curving strokes across the skin, and a fine craquelure network covers the whole crop. The chain edges are crisp against the soft skin, with no hard cast shadow beneath them.
-
Downcast eye
The eye consists of a dark pupil, a thin upper lid, and a tiny catchlight at the inner corner.
The crop isolates a downcast eye and adjacent cheek/nose bridge. The upper lid is a thin, soft-edged band of warm umber that arcs over a nearly fully-occluded iris, which reads as a single dark sliver with no visible white of the eye. A minute bright catchlight sits at the inner corner near the caruncle. The flesh transitions through a continuous value gradient — a pale ochre highlight on the bridge of the nose fading through warm peach mid-tones into a cooler, slightly greenish-grey shadow under the eye. Crisscrossing craquelure runs through the paint film, most visible in the lighter flesh passages.
-
Lips and mouth
Warm red pigment is concentrated on the lower lip, while the upper lip ends in a soft, feathered edge.
The crop isolates a profile mouth: the lower lip reads as a solid, rounded form painted in warm red-orange pigment, with a brighter highlight on its forward-projecting curve and a deeper saturated tone toward the right where it turns into shadow. The upper lip is barely articulated as a shape — its lower edge meets the mouth opening with a soft, slightly blurred transition, and its upper edge dissolves into the surrounding skin through a feathered, smoky gradient rather than a drawn line. A dark, cool shadow sits directly under the lower lip, defining its volume against the chin, while the chin itself rises as a soft mound of warm flesh tone. The whole passage is unified by visible craquelure, a network of fine paint cracks crossing both lips and skin equally.
-
Neck and chest skin tone
The skin of the right neck and upper chest shifts from warm peach at the center to cooler, gray-pink near the shoulder.
The crop shows a section of neck and upper chest, dominated by warm peach flesh tones that range from roughly #E8C2A4 in the lit central area to cooler, slightly desaturated grayed-pinks around #D0B5A8 along the left edge. A thin gold chain with tiny bead-like knots traverses diagonally from upper right to lower left, and fine wisp-like hair strands drift down from the auburn mass at the top. The lower right reveals a dark navy-black dress edge. Extensive craquelure is visible across the surface. The transition from warm to cool is gradual, with no hard line, and the cast shadow under the jawbone is rendered in a faint greenish-gray, not pure brown.
-
Trailing hair curl
A detached curl in the mid-right hair shows a warm highlight on its crest and a deep brown shadow on its underside.
The crop isolates the lower portion of long, wavy auburn hair falling against a near-black background, with a small patch of pale shoulder/upper chest visible at bottom left. A detached, S-shaped curl occupies the mid-right area, its crest catching a warm golden-brown light while the underside sits in a deep umber shadow that blends softly into the background. Hair strands are built in sweeping, fluid strokes that follow the curvature of the locks rather than rendering individual hairs, with the brightest crests placed precisely where the upper-left light would skim the form. A network of fine craquelure runs across the entire surface, sitting on top of the paint and slightly muting the underlying value transitions.
